The 10th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks, CROWNCOM 2015, which took place on April 21-23 2015 in Doha, Qatar has successfully come to the end.
With submission from over 25 countries, this 10th edition of the conference was a real meeting point between academicians and practitioners: the six featured keynote lectures have been delivered by experts within the field both from academia and industry. Ali Sadri (Intel Corporation, USA) spoke about 5G densification utilizing mmWave Frequencies, while Leandris Tassiulas (Electrical Engineering & Institute for Network Science, Yale University, USA) focused his speech on Full Radio Spectrum Exploitation. Mohamed-Slim Alouini (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology KAUST, Saudi Arabia) proposed his speech on Addressing Spectrum Scarcity through Cognitive Radio and Free Space Optical Communications and Halim Yanikomeroglu (Carleton University, Canada) discussed and commented Spatially Heterogeneous Traffic in Heterogeneous Cognitive Networks. Last but not least George Chrisikos (Qualcomm Inc., USA) and Hesham El Gamal (Ohio State University) discussed respectively on Challenges and Opportunities in Cognitive Radio Deployments and Proactive Pre-Caching and Dynamic Pricing.
The three-day conference covered various topics such as dynamic spectrum allocation mechanisms and algorithms, cloud-based dynamic spectrum sharing/access management, cognitive radio integration in heterogeneous networks and many more.
Moreover, CROWNCOM 2015 featured two panels and three tutorials as well as a co-located workshops on Cognitive Radio for 5G Networks to investigate and share new opportunities and potentials of Cognitive Radio (CR) techniques for realizing the future 5G network. During the worshop we assisted at the interesting speech by Octavia Dobre, Memorial University, Canada on next generation wireless communication.
The Best Paper, announced during the Gala Dinner, has been awarded to Sharma Shree Krishna (SnT, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg) Chatzinotas Symeon (SnT, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg) Ottersten Bjorn (SnT, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg), for their paper entitled Cooperative Spectrum Sensing for Heterogeneous Sensor Networks Using Multiple Decision Statistics.
Summing up, the conference was an opportunity to recap the state-of-art of 5G and cognitive radio oriented wireless networks and share ideas on its evolvement. ‘Advances in this technology could provide potential solutions to cellular traffic congestion problems by exploiting new and underutilized spectral resources. Moreover, as we know that growth in Machine Type Communications and Internet of Everything represents an emerging use of limited spectra. Therefore, we now believe that 5G networks are essentially required to facilitate the heterogeneous demands of users in heterogeneous-type environments via emerging 5G disruptive technologies’ – confirmed Dr. Muhammad Zeeshan Shakir, TPC of the conference together with Dr. Mohamed Adballah and Dr. George Karagiannidis, during his interview with EAI.
