Only a week until the 19th ICIN conference

Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks (ICIN) is recognized as one of the world’s leading conferences in the Telecoms domain and has a track record of attracting the best experts from all sectors of the ICT industry and academia, with high quality presentations and discussions, on Virtualization, SDN, 5G, PaaS, Big Data, Real-Time Communications and Internet of Things. The 2016 edition will take place in Paris, 1-3 March.

Marcus Weldon
Marcus Weldon, President of Bell Labs and Corporate Chief Technology Officer Nokia, USA

As President of Bell Labs and Corporate Chief Technology Officer, Marcus Weldon is responsible for coordinating the technical strategy across the company and driving technological and architectural innovations into the portfolio. Marcus holds a BSc. in Chemistry and Computer Science from King’s College, London, and a PhD. degree in Physical Chemistry from Harvard University. In 1995, he joined the Physics Division at AT&T Bell Labs as a post-doctoral researcher, before becoming a Member of Technical Staff in the Optical Materials Division, where he won a series of scientific and engineering society awards.

Ina Minei
Network Architect Google, USA

Prior to Google, Ina Minei worked at Juniper Networks as a distinguished engineer in the office of CTO, exploring SDN applications in mobile and enterprise. Before that she was director of IP and MPLS development, delivering next generation network technologies. Ina started her career at Juniper as a network protocols developer, with focus on MPLS protocols and applications, traffic engineering and network convergence and prior to that she worked at Cisco on the development of a next generation router operating system.

Volker Ziegler
Volker Ziegler, Chief Architect, Technology and Innovation Nokia Networks, Germany

Volker Ziegler serves as Chief Architect of Nokia Networks. He leads and owns the long term Nokia Networks e2e architecture; steers and leverages architectural development cycle for sustainable and innovation led growth and competitive differentiation; ensures that Nokia Networks e2e architecture evolves in step with Nokia top customers. Volker has more than 20 years of Telco and IT industry experience and has an excellent understanding of both Technology and Business.

Raouf Boutaba
Raouf Boutaba, Professor at University of Waterloo IEEE fellow, Canada

Raouf Boutaba is a Professor with the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo, Canada. His research interests are in resource, network and service management in wired and wireless networked systems with a current focus on network virtualization, cloud computing and information centric networking. For his contributions, Dr. Boutaba received several recognitions. He received the Harold Sobol Award from the IEEE Communications Society in 2007, the IFIP Silver Core in 2007, the IEEE Communications Society Joseph LoCicero Award in 2009.

Nicolas Demassieux
Nicolas Demassieux, Senior Vice President Research, Orange Labs Orange, France

Nicolas Demassieux leads the research of Orange Labs: defining the research strategy and coordinating major research initiatives involving 700+ engineers and PhD students in multiple countries, and impulsing an active policy of research partnerships with SMEs/start-ups, large enterprises and universities. He published more than 40 papers and book chapters and holds several patents. He his passionate about innovation and R&D efficiency issues. Externally to his professional activity, he is interested in a large set of science domains, including: complexity, biology, evolution and paleontology, natural and artificial ecosystems, urbanism of digital life.

Some invited papers will complete the technical program on important trends of our industry, like cooperation between network and endpoints (Brian Trammell, IETF IAB & ETH Zurich), SDN/NFV for intelligent edges (Andreas Gladisch, VP convergent networks, Deutsche Telekom Labs) and 5G challenges and way forward (Dirk Kutscher, NEC Labs).

The technical program (25% selection rate) is organized around 4 main tracks, chaired by world-renowned researchers:

  • Network IT-isation and 5G, chaired by Prosper Chemouil (Orange Labs, France);
  • Big data insights for networking, chaired by Françoise Soulie (Tianjin University, China);
  • Real-time communication platforms and services, chaired by Axel Küpper (TU Berlin and Deutsche Telekom, Germany);
  • Internet of Things, chaired by Payam Barnaghi (University of Surrey, UK).

A special session on digital platforms economics and regulation will provide a complementary business viewpoint on the ongoing transformations of the Telecom world. In addition, ICIN will host the first workshop on Green Communications Systems, included in your registration.

New Special Issues Editors

The newly set goal for all of EAI Endorsed Transactions is to publish Special Issues with content from our conferences or on a proposed topic. This creates positions for editors who would be overseeing these issues. As some of these have just been filled, we would like to introduce the persons who got them and also invite you to apply for the rest.

Dr. Liangtian Wan
Dr. Liangtian Wan

Dr. Liangtian Wan has become the Special Issues Editor for Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems transaction. He has around 30 papers published and his research currently revolves around wireless sensor networks, array signal processing and compressed sensing and its applications. Dr. Wan graduated from Harbin Engineering University and we are happy to have him on our team.

Dr. ChunSheng Xin
Dr. ChunSheng Xin

Next is Dr. ChunSheng Xin, who will be joining the editorial staff of Wireless Spectrum transaction as a Special Issues Editor. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo and he is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Old Dominion University, Norfolk. ChunSheng Xin has a plenty of experience in the field and as an editor as well.

Dr. Murat Yuksel
Dr. Murat Yuksel

Dr. Murat Yuksel, the Associate Professor at the CSE Department of The University of Nevada in Reno, was accepted to this position for Transactions on Future Internet. He has done some valuable research on optical networks and wireless routing. Dr. Yuksel has completed his bachelor’s studies in Turkey and then moved to study in New York on the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute. There, he has received his Master’s and PhD. Degree, both in Computer Science. His experience fits this position perfectly.

Prof. Phan Cong Vinh
Prof. Phan Cong Vinh

And finally, Context-aware Systems and Applications transaction has got its Special Issue Editor- professor Phan Cong Vinh, who is also its Editor-in-chief. We are glad to see his enthusiasm, as it shows us that there is an interest for closer cooperation. Professor Vinh is a Senior Research Scientist in Computing at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, Vietnam. He is an accomplished scientist with expertise in autonomic computing and hence the right person for the job.

Always keeping you informed about the latest developments in ICT innovation! In the interview we proposed you this week, Prof. Giovanni Vincenti, General Chair at eLEOT 2015, explained us one of the main issues of the Conference: new e-learning initiatives related to STEM disciplines.

Highlighting the knowledge and experience of the EAI Community members, we published one of the two Best Paper Awards from WiSATS 2015, a paper that develops an intelligent elastic Call Admission Control (CAC) scheme.

On top of informing you about upcoming conferences, we have introduced to you MONAMI 2015, the 7th International Conference on Mobile Networks and Management, which will take place in Santander, Spain on September 16-18. Follow the most innovative researchers with EAI! This week Prof. Peppino Fazio, General Chair at eCARS 2015, talked to us about new progresses in Sustainable Transportation, Electric-Vehicles and EU Energy Policy; in addition, he also explained us the importance of SmartCity360 Summit for the research community.

Moreover, always keeping the focus on papers and ICT research, Otto Borchert, author of the Best Paper Award at eLEOT 2014, introduced us CIRCLE, a new application, which offers a fresh technological perspective on “old processes” in teaching. We also presented the second Best Paper Award from INISCom 2015 in which, a group of researchers elaborated a study concerning a new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) network for energy transfer.

The delicate interconnection which exist between research and market in IoT has been discussed with Prof. Claudio Carnevali, keynote speaker at IOT360 Summit, who asserts “the Summit can lead European funds to drive those money into real projects are involving companies and researchers”.

Weekly recap

Over the last week we focused on some relevant topics for all our Community. Prof. George Teodorescu, General Chair at MOBIDanube 2015, talked with us about the upcoming conference and the mobility opportunities in the Danube region. We also published another interesting interview, with Prof. Deepa Kundur, General Chair of SGSC 2015, in which she explained us the challenges in the field of smart grids and smart cities.

This week we had a look to a significant conference of the last year, MobiHealth 2014, and published the Best Paper Award: don’t miss the opportunity to read the interesting study entitled “Involving the elderly in the content development of a health enhancing tablet-based service”, in which two researchers from the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) propose the development of a health enhancing tablet-based service. In order to return to the present year: TridentCom 2015 has successfully come to the end on the 25th of June and we summed up all the news and issues of the conference in one blog post!

Technology news are full of incremental developments and what we are pleased to do is to bring them to you. This week prof. Sá Silva, General Co-Chair at MobiQuitous 2015, talked with us about how this conference will foster research collaboration and how Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are changing our lives.

Intetain 2015 has successfully come to the end on the 12th of June, dont’ miss the opportunity to read the interesting Best Paper Award of the conference: “Wearable Vision for Retrieving Architectural Details in Augmented Tourist Experiences”, in which a team of researchers from Italy propose a new way to interact with cultural heritage sites. You can find also another Best Paper, this time from INISCom 2015, which, this year, awarded two researches: we proposed you the first one, a study on the problem of distributed subchannel selection of non-cooperative OFDMA femtocells in two-tiered macro-femto networks.

For a conference that ends many other are waiting for the start: this week we have been pleased to launch SIMUTools 2015, the 8th International Conference on Simulation Tools and Techniques, which will take place in Athens, Greece on August 24–26, 2015. The conference will focus on a broad range of research challenges in the field of simulation, modelling and analysis, addressing current and future trends in simulation techniques, models, practices and software.

As Innovation is an evolutionary process, EAI keeps promoting researchers and innovators week after week and brings you the latest developments achieved in the ICT field.

This week we proposed you an interview with Prof. Radim Lenort. General Chair of SustainableMoG 2015, a co-located conference with the Smart City 360 Summit. We talked with him about the main challenges within mobility and sustainability, and how the conference will reflect and help solve them.

In anticipation of this year’s edition, we presented an interesting research from TridentCom 2014 that introduces the different types of virtualized reconfigurable resources in the testbed of the Smart Applications on Virtual Infrastructure (SAVI) network.

Under the section ‘Radio Spectrum’ we presented Prof. Danda B. Rawat’s new contribution about Public Safety Communication (PSC), extremely vital networks during emergency situations, above all. Another not to be missed contribution we proposed you this week is the launch of the second issue of the EAI Transaction on Cognitive Communications.

Finally, we look forward for two upcoming events. ChinaCom 2015 will take place in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China on August 15–17, 2015 and will bring together Chinese and international researchers and practitioners in networking and communications under one roof, building a showcase of these fields in China. WiSATS 2015, The 7th International Conference on Wireless and Satellite Systems (formerly PSATS) will take place in Bradford, Great Britain on July 6–7, 2015 and will explore techniques such as the synergy between satellite and terrestrial wireless networks.

Research never stops, and EAI brings to you the latest advances from the ICT field. In our interview, Giovanni Giuliani, technical coordinator of DC4Cities, talked with us about this innovative European project, which promotes adaptive data centers policies that affect the energy consumption through the interaction with lower level subsystems. We also interviewed Dr. Oleksandr Artemenko, Best Paper Award at AdHocNets 2014, to find out what will the biggest challenges in Ad Hoc Networks be, and in what way his paper contributes in his research field.

We also kept you informed about our upcoming Qshine 2015, the 11th International Conference on Heterogeneous Networking for Quality, Reliability, Security and Robustness, which is to take place on August 19–20, 2015 in Taipei, Taiwan; a high-level conference which permits experts sharing their knowledge and point of view about Innovative and Intelligent Infrastructure for the Future Networks.

Finally, other links with our conferences are the papers presented during the events. We proposed you two Best Papers Awards from our latest conferences: from PervasiveHealth 2015 a study which introduces MedLink: a mobile intervention aimed at systemically addressing the failure points in depression therapy; and from Mobimedia 2015 a paper which studies the performance properties of the mobile D2D communications in the framework of user satisfaction.

Week after week EAI shares with you the most innovative advances in the ICT field, as technology is always progressing, and it touches every part of our lives.

In our interview, Dr. Radu Vieriu expressed his viewpoint about the latest challenges derived from the cognitive aspect of IoT and talked with us about the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in this field.

Swarm robotics have been the focal point of the paper we presented this week. This study won the Best Paper Award at the last year’s edition of the International Conference on Nature of Computation and Communication (ICTCC 2014) and aimed to capture self-adaptive behavior so that it could be properly designed and subsequently implemented.

The section ‘Serious Games’ presented a new captivating insight written by António Fernando Coelho about Procedural Content Generation in Serious Games and the challenges, but also the enormous potential it creates.

As usual, we keep you informed about our events. The International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare (PervasiveHealth 2015), which took place on May 20-23, 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey has successfully come to the end: we presented you some highlights from this 9th edition.

Moreover, we also keep an eye on the upcoming venues, such as the Third Conference on Auctions, Market Mechanisms and Their Applications (AMMA 2015), which is to take place in Chicago, USA on August 8-9, 2015.

Every week EAI keeps discussing with you main topics of interest for our Community of researchers and innovators. In the Insight ‘Computational Attention’ section we published the second part of the fascinating article written by Dr. Matei Mancas, a research with the focus on what attention is, from the arrival of cognitive neuroscience to the approach of computer science.

We interviewed the General Chair of the upcoming QSHINE 2015, prof. Der-Jiunn Deng, to find out what will the main focus of the Conference be and what are the novel challenges in the field of heterogeneous networking.

In anticipation of this year’s edition, we presented two of the most interesting researches of last year’s conferences The Best Paper at eLEOT 2014, introduced us to CIRCLE (Classification, Identification, and Retrieval-based Collaborative Learning Environment): a multi-user tool that aims at being a useful support for the identification and classification of real world objects. A study presented at MobiHealth 2014 aimed to promote a solution for remote medical monitoring of vital signs of victims trapped in collapsed buildings.

Finally, we look forward for the upcoming MOBIQUITOUS 2015, that will take place in Coimbra, Portugal on July 22–24, 2015 and that will foster research collaboration through focused discussions, interaction and exchange of experiences that will designate future research in the field of ubiquitous computing.
